Supporting Clients During the SNAP Funding Pause
As social workers, we know that food insecurity is one of the most urgent and destabilizing challenges our clients face. With the federal government shutdown causing a pause in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments, many Pennsylvanians who rely on these benefits are at immediate risk of losing access to essential nutrition support.
NASW-PA has compiled this page to help social workers connect clients and community members to reliable food resources throughout the Commonwealth. We encourage practitioners to share these links widely, help clients navigate available options, and remain a trusted source of accurate information during this period of uncertainty.

How Social Workers Can Help
- Inform clients that SNAP benefits are temporarily paused due to federal funding issues but will resume once the shutdown ends.
- Encourage use of existing EBT funds and connect clients with local food banks and pantries.
- Document and advocate for clients facing hardship, particularly those with children, disabilities, or fixed incomes.
- Collaborate with local networks—many counties have community action agencies and churches providing emergency food distributions.
