Bio:
Johanna Byrd, ACSW, IOM, CAE is currently the Executive Director for the National Association of Social Workers, Pennsylvania Chapter, where she has served for three years. She has worked for NASW for 20 years in a variety of positions, including as the Director of Government Affairs and Special Projects for NASW Florida Chapter, and the Executive Manager for the NASW Virgin Islands Chapter. Johanna graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas Christian University with a BA in religion studies and a BSW, and received her MSW in social work administration from Florida State University. She has served as an adjunct instructor in Social Welfare Policy and Programs, Community and Organizational Change, and Introduction to Social Work at Florida State University. Johanna serves on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Society of Association Executives, the Small Staff Association Committee for the American Society of Association Executives, and is the current Secretary for NASW’s Council of Chapter Executives. She earned her Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from ASAE in 2017 and her Institute for Organization Management (IOM) designation from the US Chamber of Commerce in 2016. She has received professional awards including the NASW Council of Chapter Executives Gilman-Wells Award, the TCU Social Work Alumni of the Year, and the TSAE Association Professional of the Year.

Role:
Amy directs continuing education programs and oversees member services for the association. She reviews approval requests for continuing education programming and leads conference planning efforts.

Bio:
Prior to joining the staff of NASW-PA, Amy directed Alzheimer's units in a skilled nursing home, assessing/admitting residents, counseling families, educating and training staff about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Amy's background compliments other staff members' as her education and work history focuses on the aging process. Amy has developed education and support programs for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias while working in Los Angeles and has provided bereavement and grief counseling for families using hospice services throughout the greater Philadelphia area. Amy received her master of science gerontology and master of social work degrees from the University of Southern California and a bachelor's of education, rehabilitation education and a minor in gerontology from The Pennsylvania State University.

Alicia serves as the Continuing Education Specialist. She manages workshop proposals and CE certificates.

Bio:
Alicia Newkam holds a high school degree from Harrisburg High School and an associate's degree in human services from Harrisburg Area Community College. She has worked for the past seven years at NASW-PA, where she has fulfilled the position of continuing education specialist. Prior to joining NASW-PA, Alicia was a child care provider for more than 5 years. She is particularly interested in environmental and cultural issues.

Role:
Tyler assures that the NASW-PA staff is effectively communicating with its members. This includes directing the NASW-PA social media presence, maintaining the monthly eNewsletter, and increasing the visibility of the social work profession to the public eye.

Bio
Tyler graduated from Messiah College with his Bachelor of Social Work Degree in 2015 and quickly found himself working with the NASW Pennsylvania, whom he had interned with during his senior year. Tyler is especially interested in advancing the field of social work by keeping the public informed about the importance of social work and the ways in which social workers have a positive impact on society.

Benny Brown Headshot

Role:
Benny handles all things related to legislation, advocacy and public policy within NASW-PA. He maintains positive working relationships with Pennsylvania legislators, organizes our Annual Legislative Education and Advocacy Day, and advocates for specific legislation that is important to the social work profession.

Bio
Prior to joining NASW-PA, Benny worked on political campaigns at the state and national level. He also has five years of experience in the legislative arena, working for two law offices in that time. In addition, he has two years of experience teaching political science courses at the college level.

Benny earned his MSW from Florida State University in 2009. He completed his MSW internship at the NASW-FL office, working with the government relations staff. Also while at Florida State, he served as president of its Black Graduate Student Association and as a College of Social Work representative in its Congress of Graduate Students. He previously earned a Master of Applied Social Science degree from Florida A&M University (FAMU). He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from FAMU, with a major in Spanish and a minor in broadcast journalism.
