Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the prevalence of undiagnosed TBI in populations such as individuals involved with the criminals justice system and those impacted by intimate partner violence.
  • Recognize the physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional deficits caused by TBI and strategies to support individuals with TBI 
  • Learn how to screen for TBI using an evidence-based screening tool
  • Understand the available funding and resources to connect individuals to brain injury rehabilitation

 

Training Summary:

This training will provide information on the intersection of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and populations such as individuals involved with the criminal justice system and individuals impacted by intimate partner violence. The increased risk for TBI in these populations will be discussed. An introduction to TBI and the subsequent physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral deficits will be reviewed. Education will be provided on how to screen for TBI as well as strategies to better support individuals with suspected TBI. Information will also be provided on resources for brain injury rehabilitation, including treatment and funding.   

 

More Information on Speakers:
Gillian Murray, DSW, LSW, CBIS has twenty years of clinical experience in brain injury rehabilitation throughout the continuum of care and, as of January 2026, is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Cedar Crest College. She is a mixed-methods/qualitative researcher with recent publications such as the feasibility and effectiveness of Virtual Reality Mindfulness in persons with traumatic brain injury and the impact of COVID-19 on social work students. Dr. Murray has a Doctorate in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Social Work from Rutgers University. She is a Licensed Social Worker and a Certified Brain Injury Specialist.
 
Claire Sitarz, MSW, LCSW is a therapist in Philadelphia whose work focuses on Practical, trauma-informed approaches to build resilience to manage mental health challenges and life transitions. Claire has over a decade of experience working with people living with traumatic brain injury. She has worked in hospital and outpatient settings, as well as providing therapy for people living with TBI and substance use disorders. Claire has a Master of Social Work from West Chester University.
