This training provides a comprehensive understanding of dual diagnosis, defined as the coexistence of intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and mental illness (MI). Participants will explore the unique challenges faced by individuals with IDD/MI while dispelling common myths that contribute to stigma or misdiagnosis. The session will review essential components of assessment and diagnosis, highlighting how clinical, environmental, and communication factors influence accurate evaluation. A strong emphasis is placed on trauma-informed care, including strategies to recognize and respond to trauma experienced by individuals and their caregivers. Participants will examine effective service models and evidence-based approaches that promote interdisciplinary collaboration and whole-person support.
