The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics requires social workers to uphold core values and ethical principles. It is challenging, however, to fulfill professional expectations while experiencing burnout. Burnout is well-cited in the literature among social workers in human service settings, yet despite the belief that burnout is expected with doing “people work”, it is an avoidable and treatable issue. This presentation will address burnout among social workers, and attendees will be able to describe different types of burnout, explain how burnout differs from other stressors, and apply strategies to prevent and mitigate the effects of burnout.
