MECHANICSBURG, PA - The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Pennsylvania Chapter is saddened by the injuries and loss of life in the aftermath of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 27, 2018, where eleven people were killed, and six, including four police officers, were injured. We offer our sincere condolences to the families affected by this act of violence, as well as to the congregation and the community-at-large.

Several news outlets have reported that this act may have been motivated by the antisemitism of a single individual. The NASW-PA leadership condemns this act, and, in keeping with the Code of Ethics, encourages members to work with community leaders to help with the healing process.

This incident is the third major mass shooting in as many years in the United States involving congregations attending services in a house of worship. Further, this incident occurred one day after a suspect was apprehended after more than a dozen home-made explosive devices were mailed to major political figures. Antisemitism, racism, gun violence, and politically-motivated acts of violence need to be addressed in the community-at-large, and we encourage social workers to lead these efforts to stop the violence and promote social justice.
