Each year, there is a theme to NASW-PA’s annual conference. Last year it was “Social Workers Stand Up.” Social workers were encouraged to stand up in the wake of trying political and social times. Ken Nwadike, a peace activist who travels to rallies and protests across the nation to spread his message of peace, inspired us to stand up, even if it’s not always the safest decision. Our social event enforced the idea that social workers are super heroes and that we each have our own unique set of powers that make us uniquely powerful in our respective social work roles. We can use those powers to stand up for the world’s most vulnerable populations and protect the ones we serve.

This year we are building upon what we’ve learned in the past and exploring new possibilities. “Explore. Connect. Grow.” was an obvious choice for this year’s conference. Three days. Three inspiring words. One powerful mantra.

This year we will be reminded of the importance of exploration, connection and growth as professional social workers. It’s a process that continues for as long as we will let it. Our hope is that you will never stop exploring, connecting and growing.

EXPLORE: As social workers, exploration is key. We explore new areas of practice, new techniques, new populations, and much more. In many ways, social workers are creative problem solvers, constantly taking on new challenges, and finding new ways to conquer them. At this year’s conference, we encourage you to explore new possibilities and practice strategies in our dozens of carefully curated educational workshops (and earn up to 24.5 continuing education credits while you’re at it!).

CONNECT: In an age of online education and social media, it’s easy to forget to truly connect with those around us, especially our social work colleagues. Much of our communication is done via email or over the phone, and with our busy schedules, sometimes it’s di icult to even find time to connect with others. This conference is your opportunity to connect with social work colleagues from across the Commonwealth, some new to the profession, and some with decades of experience. Attend our social event, network with colleagues over dinner, speak to educators in person about their presentations, and learn from those around you (or mentor someone new to the profession!). There is no substitute for connecting in person.

GROW: We know that attending this conference will be an opportunity for growth. Whether you’ve been a social worker for 50 years or you’re still in your undergraduate education, this conference will o er new tools and perspectives for you to think about. Attend keynote presentations from world-renowned speakers, Kane Smego, an international touring spoken word poet and artist, and Avish Parashar, an improv comedian who uses humor to shed light on change management. We truly believe you will walk away from this conference di erent than when you arrived!
