Quick Facts About Applying for License as a Grad Student

Here is a rundown of the steps involved in applying for your license as a grad student. If you have questions about your application, you can contact the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors at (717) 783-1389 or
  1. Apply online for a social work license & pay application fee
  2. If you are an MSW student in your last semester of grad school, you can take the exam while still enrolled in school. However, you need a verification of social work education form completed by your department chair. (last section of the application)
  3. Once approved by the state board, you will receive information about scheduling your exam through The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). The ASWB is the organization that administers the test nationally. You can also schedule your exam at
  4. Register for the exam via ASWB and pay the exam fee. The fee is currently $230. The ASWB will authorize you in order to schedule your exam, and your letter and authorization number are good for one year. NOTE: be sure to start early, as it can take a few weeks to secure an exam date.
  5. As a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Pennsylvania, you must score a 70 or higher on the Master's Level Exam. You are notified of your results right away.
  6. You can take the exam during your last semester, however be aware that if you pass, official transcripts must be sent to the state board in order to receive your license post-graduation. Once the state board has your exam score from the ASWB, your license application, and official transcripts, you will receive your social work license in the mail. This should not take long; if it does, contact the State Board to ask about the status of your application.
