Music and the Movement  (Up to 10 CEs)

A CE Film Festival celebrating the role of Broadway musicals and films in promoting social change

Discussion led by Johanna Byrd, ACSW, IOM, CAE and Kristie Jo King, LSW

Musicals have a long-lasting effect on their viewers, including the way the songs stick in your head for days, weeks, months, or even years.  It’s possible for musicals and other creative art forms to push the envelope and bring attention to otherwise hidden or impersonal social issues, resulting in real social change.  Others may simply celebrate and reinforce long-standing themes like equity and justice.  This Film Festival workshop will examine three musical productions – RENT, which tackles the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the late 1990’s; Newsies, which explores issues like child labor in the newsboys’ strike of 1899; and The Greatest Showman, seen through the eyes of circus creator PT Barnum.

During the workshop, we will view each movie and follow with a discussion on the significant themes and issues found in the film.  There will be opportunities to compare/contrast the films and to explore their long-term impacts.
