Trauma Foundations: Ahimsa and Trauma Foundations Mentoring Group

Objectives:

Part One - Ahimsa – March 23, 2019 1:30-5:30pm -  4 CEs

  • Gain knowledge of the manifestation, causes, and pervasiveness of trauma
  • Understand what makes yoga a vital tool in trauma recovery
  • Gain awareness to recognize and respond to nonverbal signs of trauma in our therapy clients/yoga students
  • Apply the basics of skillful intervention when a client or student is triggered
  • Understand the key elements to offering trauma-informed yoga instruction and psychotherapy

Part Two:  Trauma Foundations Mentoring Group

Paula Soto, LSW, ERYT, CCTP, CCFP, YACEP hosts a discussion and practicum group for trauma-informed yoga teachers and mental health professionals.  This mentoring group’s topic is trauma-focused group yoga instruction skills:  attuning and responding effectively to the needs of yoga students with differing nervous system presentations and physical abilities. In a regular yoga class, students choose the yoga class based on preferred teacher, style of yoga, and student ability level.  Thus, instructors need to differentiate instruction (offering modifications, etc.) minimally.  In contrast, a yoga class that is specifically for trauma survivors will need to be accessible and beneficial for people who have divergent instruction needs.  Yoga teachers will learn skills to recognize and accommodate a student group with differing needs.  Mental health providers will gain understanding of the challenges and benefits that clients in trauma recovery experience in yoga – information that can greatly inform the therapy process.
