MECHANICSBURG – Incoming National Association of Social Workers Pennsylvania Chapter (NASW-PA) President, Stuart Horowitz, LCSW will continue to support the chapter’s goals of passing Senate Bill 530/House Bill 445, recruiting new social workers and change the public image of social work.

Horowitz’s three-year term began last month. He succeeds former NASW-PA President, Troy Brindle, LCSW.

As President of NASW-PA, Horowitz has goals to advance the chapter’s legislative efforts surrounding various social justice issues. He is a strong advocate for change in child welfare, mental health policies, school social work, and other related social justice issues. Horowitz looks forward to assisting and leading the chapter in the legislative arena.

Social workers are educated to work at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels” said Stuart Horowitz, LCSW, ACSW, QCSW. “We are advocates and activists continuously working to improve the conditions of individuals, families, and communities.

In addition to his more localized goals, Horowitz supports global social work efforts, saying, “I would also like to see us reach out to social workers in other countries.”

Horowitz has acted as an advocate and activist during his decades of professional social work practice, working with clients as a crisis worker, intake coordinator, case manager, and therapist. He has worked on several inpatient psychiatric units and currently practices as a therapist at St. Luke’s Behavioral Medicine.

As a social worker practicing in a hospital setting, Horowitz has a particularly strong passion for integrated behavioral health, for which he hopes to develop a certification program.

Horowitz has taught social work courses at Marywood University, Northampton Community College, and Alvernia University. He currently teaches Sociology and Social Problems at Northampton Community College. He’s been a member of NASW for over 28 years, during which time he has been chair of various committees and served on the Board of Directors.

Horowitz’s social work leadership is evident in his community as he has served on various boards of directors for organizations such as CRE B’nai B’rith Youth Organization and Jewish Family Services of the Lehigh Valley.

Horowitz was on the path to professional social work from an early age, saying that he took an occupational test in the eighth grade, which indicated an interest in social work. Horowitz says, “I guess I always had it in me. In college, I took an interest in mental health and decided to pursue being a therapist. Social work provided the opportunity."
