Statement on Orlando Tragedy from Executive Director, Johanna Byrd

Last week, there was a horrific shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida that killed 49 people and injured another 53.
Orlando, the "City Beautiful,” home of Mickey Mouse, the "Theme Park Capital of the World” has lost its innocence, and will no longer be thought of as a place of warm sun and palm trees without also remembering the terrible events that happened there.
Did I mention that it’s my hometown? I have loved moving to Pennsylvania, and prefer it to Florida. However, as anyone who has moved in their lifetime knows, you always have a special connection to the place where you grew up. I lived in Orlando from ages 2 to 22, and my family still resides there. It’s where my father is buried, where my childhood home still stands, and where I still have more friends than I can easily count. Fortunately for me, none of the people I know lost their lives at the Pulse that evening. However, my friends have not been so lucky, and several people I know were affected by the loss of more than one...
