Fatherhood: Impact and the Social Work Profession (3 CEs)

Too many children are growing up without the emotional and financial support of both parents in a healthy and supportive environment, due to divorce, separation, or failure of parents to form a stable healthy relationship to support the needs of their children. Yet, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24 million children in America—one out of three—live in biological father-absent homes. This, accordingly to the National Fatherhood Initiative, creates a "father-absent factor" in nearly all of the social issues facing America today. In that regard the topic of fathers within families has become an issue of increase significance, among scholars, government policy makers, public and private philanthropist, as well as those in the corporate and faith-based community. This training is design to: 1) Increase and connect the conversation about Fathers, Families, and the Well-being of Children, 2) Be interactive and draw on the experiences of the presenter, as well as workshop participants, regarding the contemporary issue of the term fathers within families; 3) Encourage participants to explore their own childhood experience and understanding of the term Father, 4) Provide an understanding of the historical beginnings of the term "Responsible Fatherhood” within the context of U.S. Public Policy; 5) Enhance the knowledge of workshop participants regarding Pennsylvania’s emerging legal approach to Father Engagement; and 6) Motivate participants to begin thinking about creative system designs that would foster a more friendly environment for engaging Fathers within their agencies or private practice.
